Boston (AP) A 13-year dim-out may have ended for Miss Gertrude Atkinson of St. Stephen, thanks to the skill of surgeons and a person she never will know. Miss Atkinson, 28, underwent a corneal transplant Wednesday at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. The diseased cornea of her right eye was removed and replaced by a healthy cornea from a dead person. It will be two weeks before she knows whether the transplant has been successful.

The young woman vowed that if she is able to see, "I will arrange to donate this one good eye to the eye bank upon my death so that some other person will be given a chance for sight."

Her sight started failing when she was 15. She worked in mills and restaurants to save money so she could consult specialists in St. Stephen, Fredericton and Boston.
Here she learned of the eye bank and doctors arranged for a transplant as soon as the proper cornea became available.

Dick, from the time I knew him when he was 15 or 16 years old, had always been associated with John and Gladys Boone, his aunt and uncle. Because Mother and Gladys were friends and neighbors I was around him quite frequently, although being seven years younger, I was probably more of a nuisance than company in his eye. Still, I admired this quiet, deep-voiced young man. No doubt going along for a ride on the back of his double-runners had a lot to do with it. Dick had slow drawl that made his assent to a question come out something like "Aaaay-up". I think Johnny Cash in later years mimiicked Dick.

He nearly did not make it out of his teens. Coasting down the gravel surfaced Mountain Hill—probably about a 15%+ grade—one fine day, the front forks on his bicycle broke. The sudden change in velocity catapulted Dick over the handlebars to land face down in the gravel until he skidded to a stop. The accident happened in front of Luella Buckingham's house where some kind soul brought him, barely conscious and covered with blood. Luella, not one to panic over a bit of blood and dirt, cleaned his wounds, staunched the flow of blood and put him to bed in the livingroom. That is where I saw him a day or so later. He acted quite cheerful although his face looked like a shower of woodpeckers had hit it. Thankfully nothing was broken and time took care of the cuts and bruises.

In later years Dick developed respitory problems which kept him tied to an oxygen tank and fairly close to home. Still, he never lost his easy way of looking at things and he never did become a boy soprano. Aaaay-yup.

ATKINSON, RICHARD KENNTH (DICKIE) Passed away on March 21, 2003 at the Fredericton Hospital, he was 73. Richard Atkinson, of Canterbury, was born on June 5, 1929 to the late Karl and Vivian (Van Tassel) Atkinson. He is survived by his children - Susan (Arnold) Drost of Ontario, Kevin Atkinson of Canterbury and Kelly (Steven) Edwards of Canterbury, six step children - Daryl (Peggy) Keleher of Ontario, Bill Keleher of BC, Keith Keleher of Geary, NB, Wanda (Michael) Sparks of Geary, NB, Grant Keleher of Alberta and Kyde (Dianna) of Canterbury, 18 grandchildren, six great grandchildren, one sister Carol (Dusty) Robichaud of Ontario, one brother - Rowely Atkinson of Ontario and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Clara (Grant) Atkinson, by his second wife, Audrey (Grant) Atkinson, two sisters - Nona and Gladys, one brother - Kirby and two sons - Dana and Kenneth. Resting at The Carleton Funeral Home, 337 Lockhart Mill Road, Jacksonville, NB, where friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, March 23, 2003.

Funeral service will be held on Monday, March 24, 2003 at 11 a.m.. from the funeral home chapel. Interment will take place in the Canterbury Cemetery at a later date. If you wish, donations may be made to the Canterbury Fire Dept. or donor's choice.
