Stella Gillispie
Twins, Stella and Ella, were born to George and Maude Boone March 1900. Stella married Clint Gillispie in 1925, and they lived on George's farm in Forest City until her parents passed away. In the early fifties, Clint and Stella gave up farming and moved to Canterbury. She died in 1968. A wonderful lady, quiet and industrious. I spent a lot of time there in the forties; Clint always seemed to find time to rough-house with me and in the process, I leaned a ton about farming by osmosis. Fond memories of a wonderful couple.
Stella recorded faithfully in her diary beginning in 1936. Perhaps she kept earlier ones, but they have not come to light. An amusing sidelight: Stella occasionally inserted a coded word. She used a simple one called "Pigpen Code." I include it here to see what it looks like.

I am grateful to their daughter, Jean, 1927 - 2023, for allowing me access to the diaries. I share them to provide a snapshot of daily living in a small rural community. There is not a word offensive to anyone contained therein.
