Fred and family, probably around 1953-4

When Grandfather died, Fred came into possession of the farm andcarried on much as his father did; that is, a cow or two, worked inthe woods and did some carpentry work. Eventually carpentry would be afull time occupation

For a time, he and Earl Veysey teamed up doing jobs around thecommunity, but the jobs were not steady enough to sustain a decentstandard of living. Thus, in 1956, he moved to Fredericton to take upemployment with Maritime Engineers who were busy erecting new housesfor the growing population of the Capital City. Fred and his familyrented an apartment on Aberdeen Street where they also took inboarders to help the upkeep. A short stay on York Street until finallyhe build a new house on Floral Ave, a new neighborhood in Nashwaaksis. Here he lived until his retirement, moving to Forest City havingbought the old Vernon Patterson house from Ken Hawkes. With the urge to still do carpentry, Fred tackled the old house, remodelled, renovated, and restored. In between times, he and hisbrother, Basil, fished and swapped yarns.

Although he and Basil were close, Fred used to chuckle at the timesthey would get feisty with each other. One time he recalled gettinginto a scrap with Basil whereupon Basil threw him on the ground, satastraddle him, with both hands around Fred's throat. "You'll never seemother and father again", Basil panted, laying on the pressure. "For aminute or so", Fred said, "I thought he was right."

For community parties, Fred's was as popular as his sister Edith'splace. He loved to play Rook and 45. And any party would not becomplete without him singing a ditty containing the words: He walkedfour miles to school each day/In weather foul or fair/A coonskin capupon his head/And goose grease in his hair. I always thought it was asong he made up about his father, but apparently it was popular backyears ago.

I spent a great deal of time at Fred's in my early years; so much so,it almost seemed like home. Certainly Fred was not reluctant to takecorrective action if I got out of line anymore than he hesitated withhis own brood. Many a morning we would arise to find a large pot ofoatmeal on the stove which he had made before going off to work;oatmeal that had the consistency of cold molasses and stuck to one'sribs like snot on a hot radiator. I also had occasion to learn something from Fred's sharing of wisdom. I once finished with a double-bitted axe at the wood pile and left it embedded in a block of wood. Laying a hand on my shoulder, Fred said, "Every time you see an axe in that position, you think of me".He went on to explain that someone may trip or stumble and fall on the exposed bitand be seriously injured. Good advice. I never forgot it. A double-bitted axe servedtwo purposes: one bit was ground thin and razor sharp for undercutting or choppingdown trees; the other bit was no less sharp but was thicker and used to cut the limbs away.Severe cuts to the feet and legs were not uncommon in woodswork. I inflicted a badgash to my ankle with one of them necessitating a visit to the doctor and stitches.

Dorothy would tsk-tsk at some of Fred's antics, but she was a deartrusting soul who always accepted things as she saw them.Occasionally, some of us would take advantage of this to play jokes onher. As an example, her son-in-law, Glen, called her one dayexplaining he was from the telephone company, that they were testingthe lines for volume. Would she lay the phone down, step back 3 pacesand holler "hello". This Dorothy did. Then he had her step backfurther and further till she was at the far side of the room near thedoor, hollering "hello, hello". Apparently Fred came along about thistime and wondered what in the world she was doing. When Dorothyexplained, Fred snorted, "Jumpin' Crotch woman".

There were many variations of this prank but she never seemed to catchon. Quite frankly, I think she knew all along. Just went along withthem to give the boys their laughs.

One evening Fred complained about having heartburn that wouldn't seemto respond to antacids. About 11 pm he called his daughter, Sylvia, who immediately came to take him to the hospital. Fred died on the wayfrom heart failure.

Junior and Charlene at the 1990 High School Reunion

Of all my cousins, Junior (as he was known in his youth) was probablymore like an older brother than a cousin. Rarely did we have crosswords, except for one occasion when he lost his temper with me.

I don't recall what I did or said, but he really gave me tonguelashing. Finally, I threw what was left of the cup of tea I held in myhand in his face; not exactly the smartest thing I ever did. Juniordidn't lay a hand on me, but he did say with all the fury of a 16 yearold, "If you were bigger, I'd take you out behind the barn and beatthe snot out of you."

Reaching only his shoulder in height and a few pounds lighter, hisrage yielded to a sense of fair play. Fortunately, our sizes were notin the same proportion as they would become as adults when I wouldoutweigh him by 40 pounds and a six inch height advantage.

Yet, I saw him wade into Wayne Wood with a few well placed punchesbecause Wayne was "picking on me".

We had many fun times together playing in the "swamp", a dense standof fir and spruce on their property, sliding on the big hills, rook, monopoly, parlor games, and just plain goofing off.

The last time I remember being on a sled with him, we went out overthe Mountain hill pretty much covered in ice. We had wanted to walkout to the "Bridge" (local name for Kinney's store across from theFosterville Customs) with a bunch going for ice cream. Dorothy saidno; it being a school night and all. But we persisted and probably ahalf hour after the crowd had departed, we got permission, thus thefast ride on the sled. And fast it was. Vivian Buckingham, walkingalong the side near their driveway at the foot of the hill, appearedjust a blur as we shot by. I don't know what speeds we would reach but80 km per hour (50 mph) would not be out of the question. We coastedto the middle of the Corner Flat, eventually catching up with thegroup a short distance ahead.

Junior and Charlene at the Canterbury Regional High Reunion 1995

Charlene Gould, Junior's future wife, and I used to date occasionallyduring our school days. She, being the first girl I ever kissed on thelips in a somewhat clumsy and awkward manner, figured I needed someinstruction in that area. Of course, I was a willing student.

One on of these instructional sessions, cramped in the back seat ofCharles Graham's car with another couple, we were parked by the MillBrook, near the road to the Sand Beach. Suddenly, the door flew open.In crawled a bunch of hooligans intent on disrupting class, withJunior leading the way into the back seat. He squeezed in betweenCharlene and I and began laying the smooches on her. Eventually theseuncultured rowdies left, amidst a bunch of guffaws, but the damage hadbeen done. My kissing teacher met one with a PHD in lip locking.

And so my tutelage came to an end, but apparently they are stillpracticing 45 years later.

Ahh cousin…at least you could thank me for all the preparation. Sortof consider it a pay-back for you being a good buddy in our youngerdays.

d. 25 APR 1958 in Pemberton Ridge, NB

father: Boone, Donald Roscoe(1897 - 1971)
mother: Dewitt, Hazel Isabelle(1902 - 1946)
Harold drowned in a boating accident at 7:20 p.m. at the Lodgan, asmall cove of Spednic Lake at Pemberton Ridge. Just before lunch onthat day, Roscoe Buckingham, Stanley Graham, Stanley Veysey and myself(Bill Boone) stopped at Harold's - a rustic camp at Pemberton Ridgewhere he lived alone - and invited him to go to Houlton with us.Harold was not too keen on the idea, but finally said what the hell;why not? The snow had melted away but there was still ice in thelakes. It too would disappear that day.

The purpose of the trip to Houlton has been lost in the mists of time.Probably just goofing off for the day. In any event we stopped at theliquor store where each of us purchased a bottle or two which wenibbled at while meandering around the countryside. Before we arrivedback the Canadian Customs at Fosterville, I had warned my companionsnot to stow any liquor in the vehicle itself, but to secret it ontheir person. The circumstances would almost assure a closeexamination by the Customs Officer looking for contraband liquor.

My prediction proved correct. On arrival at the Port, Inspector PaulGardiner ordered everyone out while he did a though search of thevehicle. As predicted, he found nothing. It was close though. AsHarold slid out of the rear seat while the Customs Officer was walkingaround the back of the car, a pint of whiskey slid down his pants leghitting the ground without breaking. Roscoe, standing near, alertlykicked it under the car and across to Stanley Graham on the oppositeside who deftly snared it and shoved it in his pocket. Gardiner, beingbusy with the trunk compartment, missed this bit of action. Finally wewere cleared to continue on into Canada. Paul was a bit pissed to saythe least because he found nothing.

Why didn't he check our person? A personal body search then, as now,was not a common practice at border crossings. Perhaps if he had ofsearched us and found the liquor, the tragic events to follow wouldhave been averted.

By now it was nearly 5 p.m. so back to Harold's camp for a bite to eatand a hand or two of cards. Needless to say we all had more thanenough booze in us. Around 6:30 p.m. someone suggested setting a gillnet in the Logan for white perch. Harold had little use for this idea.Nor I. A date with Madeline Graham, Stanley's sister, had much moreappeal to me than fooling around in cold water with a stinking oldfish net. Nonetheless, common sense and good intentions often flyastray with whiskey induced schemes.

Grabbing a net that Harold had hanging around we set off amid muchhilarity and horse play. Parking the car in Norman Higg's yard, wewalked, staggered, reeled and careened the three quarters of a miledown to the lake where a canoe had a loose connection with a ricketywharf. We made ready to sail. Harold, Roscoe and I would go out andset the net; Stanley G and Stanley V would wait on shore. Safetyprecautions? None. No life jackets or floats. Zip. Harold, anexperienced guide and boater, never did learn how to swim. No need. That's why boats were made. My own ability so-so. I never gave anythought to Roscoe's swimming prowess. With this carefree (careless?)attitude we set sail. Me in the stern, Harold in the center, Roscoe inthe bow. Just before pushing away from the wharf, I did remove myheavy leather motorcycle jacket commenting that I would not be able toswim back with that on. An omen? How prophetic those words turned outto be.

As we slid off from shore, Harold became agitated. Apparently hedecided he wanted to be in the stern rather than the center and beganto move about. Now changing positions in a canoe is risky business atthe best of times. To attempt it on choppy water and under theinfluence is idiotic. I made a decision to return to shore. Just as Iswung the canoe around, suddenly without warning I was looking at thesurface of the lake for a split second before I was under water. Wehad upset some one hundred feet or so off shore.

One explanation is that Harold attempted to stand as I made the turn. This threw him off balance against the rail and the rest, as they say,is history. Although the water was only 10-12 feet deep at that point,it seemed to me I went down a lot further than that. It looked a alongway to the surface as I started back up. A pair of heavy boots gave mea moment of concern but as they filled with water I more or lessforgot about them. I broke the surface in a near panic. Then for someinexplicable reason the realization flooded my mind that I was notgoing to drown on this particular day. I have no idea where thatparticular thought came from, but it did have the effect of calming medown to where I could think rationally.

Fortunately, I surfaced near the canoe now floating upside down.Grabbing it, I looked around to see Roscoe already heading for shore.Harold was about 8-10 feet away feebly pawing at the water which wasjust about level with his chin. He spoke not a word.

Laying across the canoe and kicking it towards him, I yelled for himto grab my hand thinking if I could get a grip on him with the canoebetween us we stood a chance of making it out of this mess alive. Thedistance was too great. While trying to extend my reach, I slipped offthe canoe once more. When I came up on the canoe the second time,Harold had slipped from sight. Using the canoe as a springboard, Ileaped for shore and swimming full bore reached it at about the sametime as Roscoe did. Immediately removing my boots and shirt, I wadedback out to my waist to attempt to find Harold, but simply could notforce myself to lay down in the frigid water. Its temperature latertaken showed 34 degrees. While this drama unfolded, the two Stanleyson shore could only watch helplessly. There was nothing nearby toassist us, and we were too far from the settlement for immediate help.

We soon came to the conclusion there was nothing we could do forHarold. He had been gone from sight 5-10 minutes. We made our way upthe hill to Norman Higgs' house where the community was alerted to thetragedy. Within minutes several men arrived and made a valiant attemptto recover Harold's body before dark. They were unsuccessful but madeplans to resume early next moring.

Roscoe and I wrapped in some blankets were none the worse for theexperince physically. Emotionally, we were in severe mental anguish.

As with any accidental death, the RCMP from Woodstock attended thescene to investigate as well as take charge in recovering the body. OnSaturday morning, April 25, 1958 about ten a.m. Basil Boone and a RCMPconstable located Harold by using grappling hooks. We were there tohelp pinpoint the location of the accident and help bring him ashore.Harold's watch had stopped at 7:20 p.m.

The investigation revealed death by accidental drowning. While thatfinding may satisfy the legal aspects, there is little doubt liquorand stupidity played a large part in this senseless tragedy. On April28, Stanley Graham and I were two of the pall bearers who carriedHarold to his final resting place from the Fosterville Baptist Church.Truly a sad ending to a carefree outing of a few days before.

Harold had never married.
