We are again called upon to record the death of one of our young people in the person of Howard, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Lutz, at the early age of seen years and eight months. He had been ill about six months with lung trouble. He passed away with a smile in the early dawn of Saturday, 18th 1920. He was conscious up to the last moment. He was general favorite among the young people, being possessed of a pleasant disposition, always ready to offer his services to any who needed assistance. The community grieves with the family in their very sad loss. While he was able he attended the Sabbath school and fully prepared for greater service the greater school above.
He leaves to mourn his sorrowing mother and father, four sisters, Ella, Nettie, Lottie and Alice, an aged grandmother and his uncle, George Lutz, besides numerous relatives and hosts of friends. The funeral services were held in the U.B. church her, Mr. Sedences Foster being director, Rev. Mr. Clarke of Danforth, Me., officiated.
The floral offerings were beautiful, the casket being hidden from view with many reminders of respect from relatives and friends. The hymns were “In the Rifted Rock”, “Face to Face”, and “We’ll Never Say Goodbye in Heaven”. The funeral cortege proceeded in automobiles to the lower cemetery where the remains were tenderly laid to rest.

Updated info from B Gregg by email on Jan 29, 2004 who writes, in part,:George W. Maxan is my great-grandfather and my parents have possession of the family Bible that has the names and dates of his immediate family, including his parents and children, recorded by my great-grandmother (his wife), Margret (this is the spelling of her name in the Bible) Graham. Also, I have searched through the microfilm of the census of 1901, 1881, 1871, and 1861 in York County (Northlake/Canterbury districts) which confirms all of this information and includes some more. His father, James Maxan died August 18, 1869 at age 70. (The census of 1861 indicates he was born in NB (1799)). He was married to Lydia (maiden name unknown) who died in February 26, 1883 at age 76. I had found his death in the provincial archives (online) and also in the Fosterville Cemetary (Upper Cemetary) which indicates that he must have had a son James H. who died at age 15 on February 23, 1858. (Their marker locations are side by side.)

Gould of Eel River Lake and they made their home at Forest City where she united with the Baptist church. In 1902 they removed to a farm in the district. (Pemberton Ridge). After her husband’s death, her grandson, Norman Higgs, carried on the farming. (Norman was sixteen when he took over the farm after the death of his grandfather. He continued this work until he retired, remaining in his grandparent’s home.)Mrs. Gould was a woman of high Christian character, a friend to all, beloved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed in the community. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. John Higgs, five grandchildren, Laurel Higgs of Green Mountain, Carl Higgs of the RCAF somewhere in England, Mrs. Frank Worrell of Baillie, NB, Norman Higgs and Annie Higgs at home; two sisters, Mr. H.F. Smith of Haynesville, Me., and Mrs. Ralph Kerr of Celeste, Texas, and a brother, George A. Maxan of Sussex, NB
The funeral was held in the Baptist church at Forest City, Rev. R.C. Bubar and his son of Danforth, Me., officiated and spoke words of comfort from the text: To Die Is To Gain, Phil. 1:21. The hymns sung were Shadows and Sometime We’ll Understand. The floral tributes were beautiful.
Interment was made beside her husband in the Forest City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Wesley Buckingham, Fred Graham, Melzie Graham, and Basil Boone.

The wedding of Bobbie MacArthur-Burns, daughter of Mr and Mrs Sandy MacArthur, 45 Elmwood Court, and Perley Byron Embleton, 122 Miles Stree, son of the late Mr and Mrs Selby Embleton, was held at the Christ church Cathedral. Rev. H. Gordon Smith officiated at the private double ring ceremony.
The bride was attired in a dress of ivory chiffon over satin, featuring long chiffon sleeves and round neck trimmed with importe French lace. She wore a wide-brimmed ring hat of white chiffon ivory accessories and a mauve orchid corsage.
Her sister, Mrs Gordon McLeod, as Matron of Honor was attired in mauve and pink satin with white accessories and a corsage of pink and white roses. Bridesmaid, Miss Evely Hogoin wore a pink and white chiffon dress with white accessories and pink and white rose corsage.
The bride's mother chose a powder blue lace and crepe ensemb le with white accessories. Her corsage was blue and white feather carnations.
Groomsman was Gordon McLeod.
Following a reception at the Moon Palace, an informal punch party was held at the home of the bride's parents.
Out of town guests came from Bagotville, Que., Glace Bay, N.S., Halifax, Moncton, Saint John, Woodstock, Hartland, Oromocto, Keswick, Victoria, B.C., Florenceville, Houlton, Me., and Canterbury.
The groom is employed with Bowes Auto Services. The bride will return to the Oromocto teaching staff after teaching in Bagotville for the past three years. Mr and Mrs Embleton will reside at 122 Miles Street.

Woodstock, Oct. 4, 1954 - [Special] - Three persons were hospitalized Friday evening and early Saturday morning in two widely separated accidents.
One of the injured, Miss Joanne McArthur, 15, daughter of Sandy McArthur of Eel River Lake has a broken back and was taken by ambulance from the Carleton Memorial Hospital here to the Saint John General Hospital Saturday morning. She was a passenger in a car that went off the road two miles below Canterbury on the Skiff Lake Road (Route 122) shortly after midnight Saturday morning, Oct. 1.
Kenneth Dow, 19, son of Robert Dow of Canterbury was in the other car involved in the same accident. He was injured internally and was operated on Saturday afternoon and is reported to be resting comfortably.
In the accident, both cars were almost a total loss. Glendon Graham, 16, son of Harold Graham of Eel River Lake, was driving the car in which Miss McArthur was a passenger. He and three other passengers escaped with slight cuts and bruises. The other vehicle involved was operated by Samuel Collier, 21, of Canterbury, who was not injured. Dow was with Collier. Both vehicles went off the road together and rolled over several times.
From reports both vehicles were traveling at a high rate of speed. One swerved to pass the other and in a chilling instant of terror the two cars brushed, the second vehicle lunged ahead overturning.
The car with Joanne and her friends lurched off the road and in an anguish of thuds and metallic clanks, rolled over and over, striking against solid rocks, coming to rest with a ghastly stillness, as its occupants hurled against one another in the crushed body of the vehicle.
Joanne was pinned beneath the misshapen roof of the car. She was rushed to the Woodstock Hospital where she received a preliminary examination. Diagnosis: severe spinal injury. Immediate surgery was necessary but it could not be performed at Woodstock. Earliest and nearest hope for surgery was Saint John, 150 miles away. She left by ambulance at 8 a.m., her parents accompanying her.
For two days she waited while specialists examined her injuries and made x-ray studies. On her third day she was wheeled into the operating room. The operation did not reverse the paralysis affecting her from the waist down.
On January 4, 1955, she left Saint John for Montreal to face her next bout in the hospital. Joanne’s surgeon in Saint John felt that the new physical rehabilitation program at Pasteur Institute might help her adjust to the new life ahead.
The Institute confronted her with a different way of life altogether, foreign and incomprehensible. Nearly all the staff and almost all the patients were French speaking who understood little, if any, English. Joanne understood very little French.
In May, after the long and futile months in Montreal, she returned to her home. At least she was in a world she knew and understood. There was little progress from her stay at the Pasteur Institute.
Joanne will likely spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair. She is undergoing physical therapy at the Polio Center in Fredericton to help her become as self-reliant as possible.
(Much of this was gleaned by an interview Joanne did for National Safety Week in Nov. 1955. Joanne went on to earn a law degree at UNB.
On Jan. 12, 1955, the Grand Jury of the York County Court in Fredericton, returned a true bill on the case of Glendon Graham, 17, charged with reckless driving. The case was adjourned until Feb. 2 before Justice J. Bacon Dickson.
The outcome was not mentioned in later editions of the paper. Nor was there any mention of charges against Sam Collier.

[Al Rogers, Staff writer for the Daily Gleaner] -More than a quarter-century has passed, but the horrors, privations and indignities of a Japanese prison camp of World War Two, still linger in the mind of a Fredericton resident. It all began early in October 1940, when Robert McGinn - now living at 11 Carleton Street, tried to join the Canadian army. His buddies had alreqady joined and were training for overseas duty. He was sixteen years old. When his father heard of his son's intentions, young Robert was quickly removed from the military nominal roll.Robert McGinn had to enlist. He knew he was too young to make it in the provincial capital, so he hiked off to Sussex where he volunteered, and was accepted by a Quebec Regiment, the Royal Rifles of Canada. Perhaps if he knew then the terror he was to face, he might have changed his mind. But less than a month later young McGinn was a rifleman, starting training that was to lead ually to four years of imprisonment on foreign soil.He joined the Canadian Army weighing 160 pounds. He was to reach 175 pounds only to drop later to 120 in less than one week. From Sussex, after basic rifle training, he moved to Newfoundland, then conisered an overseas posting. There training continued with the ancient field and strip Lewis, the Lee Enfield rifle and the newly designed British Bren gun. While in Newfoundland, uniforms and personal equipment for the members of the Canadian Army were not available. Private McGinn and many troppers had to send hom for civilian garb to maintain reasonable dignity when appearing before the public. His tour was short in the island colony. After a 13-day stay in Saint John, the entire regiment moved to the Citadel in Quebec; that was in October, 1941.Then the start of the big fateful jump took place. Robert McGinn and his regiment left Camp Valcartier in October, 1941. On arrival in Vancouver they immediately boarded the troopship that was to bring them closer to four years of torment. There were about 1900 troops on board the ship, said Mr McGinn. Besides his own regiment of Royal Rifles, there were soldiers of the Winnipeg Grenadiers. After 21 days on the peaceful Pacific and a colorful but brief stop-over in Honolulu, the young Canadian adventurers marched smartly down the gangplans onto the island of Hong Kong.During the sea voyage, heavy clothing issued for the Canadian winter was discarded and the tropical gear given to all hands. When they set foot on the Oriental island in mid-November, 1941, it was a far cry from chilblains and red noses of New Brunswick.Long before the Orient became a fell reality, Mr McGinn said the Canadian government was saying war would not break out in the Pacific. They were sending a token force to augment the British in Hong Kong, and were sure all would be well. But, said Mr McGinn in an interview recently, "Our platoon officer, a Lt. Fry, was betting ten-to-one we would be the first Canadians in action as a regiment." He said the lieutenant was making this prophecy while their train was hurtling through the Canadian Rockies.Lt. Fry died in Hong Kong. "We knew before we got to Vancouver we would be in action ..." said Mr McGinn. He added, "We didn't get official work of our desitnation until we left Honolulu. Then the birgadier tolds us that 'depending on ourselves', if we ever got back home, we might have to fight our way off the ship because Japan was ready to go to war."He said, "We were roughly two weeks there (in Hong Kong) before the Japanese launched their assault on Pearl Harbor Dec 7, 1941." He said all troops were moved off mainland China to Hong Kong, where battles raged for 18 days before the dramatic surrender.Of the surrender, Mr McGinn said, "We fought for 18 days before we were order to give up. We were beat anyway. There was no food, the water supply was cut off, and our defence was limited to small arms against the artillery, ortaar and aircraft of the enemy." The governor of the island, said Mr McGinn, surrendered because the enemy threatened to wipe out the civilian population. That was Christmas day, 1941.During the actual surrender, Private McGinn was scouting elsewhere. He, tow other Canadians and a Chinese were foraging for food, water and ammunition. they saw a ship rammed on the rocks off shore."We didn't surrender to the earlier bids of the enemy," he said, "because we were told the Japanese didn't take prisoners of war." While the four were making their way to the derelict ship, they were stopped dead in their tracks by a platoon of enemy soldiers. The Japanese were down on a small road on both sides of a small hill in the mountains of the iland of Hong Kong. Surrounded, the Canadians smashed their rifles to keep them from enemy hands. Then McGinn ripped his undershirt to make a white flag, and tied it to a sitck. "We were so scared and excited," said Mr McGinn, "we didn't walk around the small hill but jumped to the road, a drop of about 25 feet, landing on our feet." To this day he still remembers the landing. "It sure stung ...""They (the enemy) wanted to know who we were and when we said Canadian, they couldn't figure out what the Canadians were doing there. They expected on British and Americans." He said the officer in charge of the enemy platoon spoke some English, enough for us to understand him. He said the Japanese were "as confused as we were."There the formalities ended. The New Brunswick soldier and his buddies were "put to work burying the dead. But," he added, we didn't bury them, we threw them over the side of the cliff, and teh bodies landed about 200 feet below." He explained that the location was the side of a mountain, and the bodies - some of which were dead for more than a week in the sweltering sun - were heaved to continue decomposition far below. The dead were Canadian, British, Japanese, Chinese and Indian; "about 100 bodies," he said. After the gruesome task was completed, the Japanese tgied their prisoners hands high behind them - near the neck - with barbed wire Mr McGinn recounted. "It was extremely difficult to board the trucks were were ordered to get on because of the position of our arms, and the pain of the wire. But with a bayonet jabbing behind, we made it."The barbed wire manacles stayed in place overnight and were only removed the next day. Diseases spread and discomforts were piled on discomforts.Working on an airport was the main task of Mr McGinn and his friends. He said, "One end of the airport was the water-front and the other was at the base of a mountain. We had to move that mountain with pick and shovel." He said, "During the winter months we never saw daylight in the prison camp. We left it at 5 o'clock in the morning and got back at eight o'clock at night." Still the menu consisted of rice and boiled seaweed. Occasionally, lsaid the veteran, there was something special, fishheads and entrails. "All this time," said Mr McGinn, "the men kept going 'down the hill'." When he was taken prisoner, he weighted 175 pounds, but soon overtaken with malaria and dysentry, he had wasted to a mere 120 pounds ... all lost within a week. One of the most horrible and continuing discomforts was an "unknown" disease the troops called "hot feet". It was like some sort of beri-beri, said Mr McGinn. There was no relief from the constant burning, itching and pain. The only temporary relief was to plunge the feet in cold water, but "believe it or not, the water would become very warm". Few, if any of the men affected by the discomfort, lay on their backs for a full night's sleep. They were constantly wracked by the torture of the painful, burning feet, and were rubbing, scratching and bathing. The enemy offered no cure. The most vicious guard officer was a Canadian-born Japanese. He would constantly harass the prisoners, and spoke flawless "Canadian". There were many instances of uncalled for abuse from him. Then began the move from camp to camp. It started on teh island of Hong Kong, to the mainland of China and back to Hong Kong. Work and more work, all on a diet of rice and boilded seaweed, started the death toll climbing. As he told stories during this interview in his home, Mr McGinn's children listened attentively, they said their dad never told them these things, except perhaps for the funny happenings during his incarceration in the enemy camp.On one occasion while working on the airport, a Japanese soldier approached the 18-year old Canadian prisoner and ordered him to fix his truck. McGinn explained to the guard he knew nothing of the machine, and had never even driven a truck. The guard lost patience and swung a bamboo pole hard across Mr McGinn's mouth. The blow broke his front teeth. He then began fooling around with the truck and it worked! "I don't know to this day what I did to it." Because of his success, Mr McGinn was still more unpopular with the guard who believed he lied from the beginning. It was not unusual, he said to get a belt from a frustrated guard, or to be deprived of something that was in actuality already a privation.Water was contaminated; diptheria broke out in the camp, and they were "hauling out seven or eight dead a day". One many, said Mr McGinn, was more than six feet tall and weighted 220 pounds before he was struck by the camp and the disease. When he died he weighed 80 pounds. He was one of the first to succumb to the water problem. He was John Post of Glassville."The only thing that saved a lot of us from dying was our morale." He said he and others were determined to keep going, to get home and not give in to the enemy. He said a man from Sussex, who was at roll call parade one night said, "to hell with this, I am giving up. I'm not going to fight it any more." Mr McGinn said the chap sent to bed, and in the morning his b uddies found him dead. The troops once slept on concrete floors, but later the enemy collected a lot of steel bunks from the B ritish stores, then supplied "double biscuit" mattresses. Over the months the mattresses soon collected their own inhabitants, bedbugs. To creat a diversion, the prisoners would b ring the mattresses out into the sun, remove the denizens and place them in a circle made in the sand. Here they would add a goodly number of ants, and bet on the winners. The betting was generally food, because, said Mr McGinn, "that was all we ever thought about ... food.During the four year imprisonment, the Canadians got one and one-half Red Cross parcels. One was from Canada, and the half was from the US. "There were all sorts of Red Cross parcels in the camp," said Mr McGinn, "but they (the Japanese) would not give them to us."At no time were the prisoners allowed to call their captors Japs or Japanese. They were to be referred to as Nipponese. The first inkling they got of impending Allied victory was when two girls got close to them while they were walking back to camp. "they told us the Russians had declared war on Japan", Mr McGinn said. He believed the girls were either Russian or German. The same two girls also brought them news that Japan had surrendered. There had b een rumors but the Japanese guards were not confirming or saying anything. One nightthe prisoners were awakened by rockets, fire-crackers, shouting and planes flying overhead. The camp commandant ordered the guards to have the prisoners back in their quarters "as they well be tired in the morning." We knew then it was all over, said Mr McGinn.Next day there was no work, and the "first thing I remember," said Mr McGinn, "was a Canadian navy sailor walking in through the gate of the camp. "That is when I was really sure the war was really done.""When we went down to the docks," said Mr McGinn, "I found someone from Fredericton on board the ship ...a Canadian ship. He thought I might want a drink and said I could have anything I wanted. I asked for a loaf of bread." The sailor was astonished, but he produced the bread. The excited New Brunswicker, just released from the prison camp said, "I tore it apart, and ate it. It was just like a piece of cake." He said he didn't realize it at the time, but then it came to him ... "I was dressed only in Japanese G-string and a pair of Chinese wooden clogs."The trek home was on board the Empress of Australia with a brief stop over in the Phillipines. The tired Hong Kong veterans arrived in Victoria, BC almost four full years after they left Canada. Refitted in new uniforms, they headed for home. When Private McGinn arrived in Fredericton, he was met by his family, a host of friends, a military band, and hundreds of school children. Herby Webber (now proprietor of Herby's Music Store) arranged for a half-day holiday for schools for the home-coming of the Fredericton Hong Kong veteran. It was like a dream, said Mr McGinn of his home coming. All the pay he had accumulated while a prisoner of war was spent quickly or "given away". He said "If a guy came up to me and asked for 10 bucks, I gave it to him. I somehow lost all value of money and I was still counting in Japanese yen."Still he is a happy man. Mr McGinn said, "I cant really remember the pains as much but I remember the suffering and the rough deal ...somehow it is just a bad dream."He is now custodian of the Carleton Street Armouries. He is on a 60 percent disability pension. His health is still bad from the long period of malnutrition, his eyesight suffered and his legs are not strong.

A quiet wedding took place at the United Church of Canada Manse in Canterbury on Wednesday April 27, when Mabel V. Hall of Canterbury was united in marriage to Percy B. Doten of Woodstock. Rev. F.C. Burrill officiated at the ceremony.
The bride was becomingly gowned in a dress of navy sheer nylon over taffeta, with navy and white accessories, beautifully set off by her corsage of American Beauty roses. For travelling she wore a dusty rose full length coat.
Attending the ceremony were the bride's mother, Mrs Winnie McGuire of Fredericton, Mr and Mrs Vaughn Hall, Vernon Hall and Mrs F.C. Burrill, all of Canterbury.
The newly married couple left by car for a trip through the Eastern States.

She is survived by her children Richard (Judy) Fredericton Junction, Michael (Betty) New Maryland, and Janice Wilson (Doug) Bedell, 8 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildreNBesides her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband of 70 years, Paul F. Gardiner on June 4, 2010. She was the last remaining member of her immediate family. She was a member of the Woodstock Baptist Church. In the past, she was active in the Order of the Eastern Star, having been a past Matron of Nonpareil Chapter No. 92, Danforth, Maine, a past Grand Representative of Arkansas in Maine, and a past Grand Adah of the Grand Chapter of Maine. She was a member of the Victoria Chapter No. 1 OES, Woodstock, NB.Before her marriage to Paul in 1940, she worked at Woolworths in Fredericton where she was responsible for her own sales counter. During the war, while Paul was overseas, she worked at Belding-Coricelli Ltd. in Montreal as an Executive Secretary. Upon returning to New Brunswick after the war, she stayed at home and raised her family, first living in McAdam and then moving to Fosterville, where she and Paul lived for 31 years. They moved to Woodstock when Paul retired in 1984. She was an amazing cook and baker, and she tempted all with her homemade bread and sweets, especially her donuts. She very much loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and her family held a very special place in her heart.Special thanks to the wonderful, caring staff of the Carleton Manor, Woodstock, NB. Also special thanks to Marlene Forrest and Brenda Alexander for their regular pampering and attention.
