Newspaper Article on inquest held into the death of Gerald Veysey and Stewart Durling. No date, but would have been held in 1965, probably later that month of January or early February. It reads: An inquest into the traffic deaths of Gerald Veysey of Fosterville and Stewart Durling of Canterbury was held this past Friday evening at the Town Hall in Woodstock. After receiving their final instructions from Coroner Jasper Blake, the jury weighed the evidence for an hour and a half before reaching its verdict. They found that Stewart Durling and Gerald Veysey met death while operating a motor vehicle which was in collision with another vehicle driven by Father Rev F.J. MacDonald, at 4:15 pm January 19 on old route number 2 where the trans Canada portion of the highway ends just north of Thompkins canteen.Cause: "Stewart Durling and Gerald Veysey met their death by operating a motor vehicle while they were under the influence of alcohol, beyond a doubt, according to RCMP lab reports, but the actual cause of the accident is unknown to us." The jury recommended that "any person having knowledge of any other person operating a vehicle or car while under the influence of liquor, should take necessary steps to have this person removed from the highway for the safety of all persons concerned." The inquest first assembled at the Carleton Memorial Hospital to hear from Rev Father MacDonald who has been a patient there since the accident. He said that he was traveling north in his own lane at about 45 mph in his Pontiac and that the car approaching him traveling south was just like any other car when suddenly it began to wobble or fishtail and then moved into his lane.Following his testimony the jury then moved to the Town Hall to hear from the other witnesses.Constable Doug Horn of the RCMP was the first called by Paul Maddox. (Note:- Doug retired from the RCMP in 1977 and took over policing duties in Hartland that same year, retiring for good in 1997. He now lives in Eastern Townships, Quebec) He told the inquest that he and Dr. M.E. Margison traveled to the scene which he described as a wide sweeping curve. No visible skid marks at the scene, he said, and the road was good. The Pontiac had been struck on the left front, and the Consul had also been hit on the left front, with bits of wreckage scattered all about.Dr Margison was next to testify. He told of arriving at the scene and checking the condition of the lone occupant of the Pointiac. While he was doing this someone at the scene told him one of the men in the other car was dying so he went over but found that both men were dead. Dr Margison gave the reason for death to both men as multiple skull fractures and undetermined internal injuries. He testified Durling was under the wheel. He could not ascertain whether death was instant or not. After arriving back at the hospital he was asked to take blood samples of the two dead men which were given to Const. Horn and sent to the RCMP lab in Sackville. He said he did not take a blood test from Father MacDonald. Dr Margison said he could not say what effects a certain amount of alcohol would have on an individual. When asked what effect .37 per cent blood-alcohol would have, he read from the Lab report which said such a level acts as a depressant and an average person is usually in stuporous condition. The report indicated Durling's blood-alcohol was .37 and Veysey's at .13. (note:- the legal limit is .08. Durling was more than 4 times the legal limit. Given the frequency with which Gerald indulged, his reading would scarcely be noticeable by his actions. Unfortunately, Durling was driving.) Next to testify was Rev Onden Stairs of Augusta, Maine. He told the hearing that while traveling south on the highway he overtook a small car which attracted his attention, being driven in an erratic way. After following for a short distance, he sounded his horn and passed. Soon after he heard a roar behind, and the car was following close to his rear bumper. He accelerated and drew away rapidly. He said that a dark colored car traveling north in a usual manner went by him and Rev Stairs said he then looked in his rear view mirror to see how "he will make out". He said he saw flying debris, and pulled his car to a stop and went back to investigate.Bruce William Carr was then called upon, and he reported that he saw a car pass where he was sliding hear his home on the river road. The car had two men in it and they were passing a bottle back and forth.Harold Hatfield of Woodstock then told of being at Joe Griffith's garage at about 4 pm and talked to During there. He said he was horsing around as usual but did not see him drink anything. The other man with Durling had a glass with a shite liquid in it, he said. Mr Hatfield said that Durling was driving as the two left the garage and he drove all right.Joe Griffith said that two men were at the garage for about a half hour and he did not see them drinking. They had inquired about some body repairs for the Consul sports car they were driving.Ken Ralston said the he wass working in the back of the garage and didn't see the men come in.Harold Harley told of inspecting the two cars involved in the accident and found the steering mechanism intact on both.Constable Horn was then recalled as the final witness and he presented six phoographs which showed the condition of the highway, location, and position of the cars following the collision. He said that both cars had been search. Nothing unusual was ound in the Pontiac, but a quantity of broken glass was found on the passenger's side of the Consul sports car, along with some full bottles of alcohol with the seals on and a bottle of vodka with the top broken off and a 1/2 ounce of liquid in it.It was midnight when the jury reached its verdict. The foreman was Jack Fulton, and members included Floyd Saunders, Walter Hatfield, Murray Riordon, Robert Clark, Seth Way, Roy Grant and Walter Neal.

Lenora S. Scott, 89, of South Portland passed away at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House April 22nd, 2019.She was born and raised in Fosterville, New Brunswick, Canada by Alfred C. and Hattie B Veysey. She was one of 14 children. She graduated from the Tabusintac school system. The first 3 years of her career were spent in the Canadian school system teaching grades 1-8. In 1946 she met the love of her life Herbert L. Scott. In 1948 they married and decided to move to the United States. Lenora spent the next 28 years of her career as a fabricator with Fairchild Semiconductor making computer chips. She met many lifelong friends working in the Fairchild family. When Lenora wasn’t working, she enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening and car rides. Her daughter, Jerri, fondly remembers that they didn’t have store bought bread in the house until 1966. The holidays always included lots of delicious pies, pastries, cookies and cakes. When she wasn’t baking you could find her in the garden. Her favorites were peonies, roses, and rhododendrons. There was also the big white flower in the back that no one was allowed to touch. For those wondering, it was called Queen Anne's Lace. Lenora and Herbert loved taking car rides together; Sunday morning drives and drives along the coast after dinner. Sometimes they would pack a picnic lunch and drive to Bug Light for their meal.Lenora is predeceased by her parents and several brothers and sisters. She is survived by her husband, Herbert Scott, daughter Jerri and husband Mark Palmer, son Laurie and wife Catharine Scott, son Ronald Scott and longtime companion Sandy MacDonald, 2 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and 2 sisters. On April 24th, Wednesday, from 9:30-10:30 A.M. there will be a period of Visitation at the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland, Maine. The Forest City Baptist church was the scene of a very pretty wedding on Wednesday, June 18, when Rev. E.A. Allaby united in marriage Miss Nettie Veysey of Forest City and Harry Morehouse of Woodstock.
The bridal party entered the church at two o’clock p.m. to the strains of Lohengrin’s wedding march played by Miss Tressie Lewis. The church was beautifully decorated with ferns and flowers, and the arch was made of evergreens and honeysuckle flowers. The bride was becomingly gowned in white duchess satin, trimmed with pearls and wore a veil and orange blossoms and carried a bouquet of Ophelia roses. She was given in marriage by her brother, Tyson Veysey. The maid of honor, Miss Elsie Veysey, sister of the bride, wore a dress of Ayrdale satin canton crepe, with hat to match and carried a bouquet of pink and white carnations. Little Joyce Morehouse, a niece of the groom, was flower girl and wore a dress of yellow organdie with hat to match. The groom was supported by Byron Chase of Ripples. The ushers were Arthur Hamilton, Jr., and Oscar Patterson.
At the conclusion of the ceremony a reception was held at the home of the bride’s mother at which over sixty guests were present. The bride’s cake was in the centre of the table and was served afterwards.
The bride, who has been engaged in teaching school for three and one-half years, received many beautiful gifts. The groom’s gift to the bride was a mink marmot choker; to the maid of honor and organist, bar pine; to the best man, cuff links, and to the ushers, mother of pearl tie clips.
Mr. and Mrs. Morehouse left by automobile for Wesford Beach and other parts of NB Upon their return they will reside in Bangor, Maine, where the groom is engaged in mason work. The bride’s suit was gray hair-line twill, with hat to match.
Among those who came from a distqance were: Mrs. Margaret Ballentine, mother of the groom, Mrs. Talmage Ballentine and Joyce Morehouse of North Lake, Mr. and Mrs Ottie Illther (??) and family, Miss Hazel Goodall, of Houlton, Mr. and Mrs. George Lewis of Bangor, and Mrs. A.C. Carol A. Young, 68, passed away Nov. 7, 2012, at a Bangor hospital. She was born Nov. 10, 1943, in Brewer, daughter of Luther and Gladys (Boone) Walls.
Carol grew up in Brewer and graduated from Brewer High School in 1962. She met Ivan Young in 1966 and was married Nov. 15, 1969, in Brewer. They started their life together in Newburgh and moved to Franklin in 1975. Carol worked for the town of Franklin for 23 years and volunteered at Franklin Veterans Club for Beano night. Carol enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing and cooking, especially making doughnuts and whoopie pies. She was very proud to use her antique cookware and appliances to cook. Many of her hats and gloves she made went to charity organizations. Carol was a very giving and loving woman. She absolutely loved gallivanting around with her best friend, Ginny Emerton, and loved going to camp at East Grand Lake.
She is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Ivan of Franklin; sons, Ivan Gordon Young II and his wife, Lori Lin, of North Pole, Alaska, Richard Young and wife, Cate, of Ellsworth and Royce Young and wife, Kristina, of Newburgh; son-in-law, Scott Brown of Hancock; grandchildren, Michael, Keegan, Hunter, Logan, Madison, Haleigh, Aiden Sophia and Kelsey; stepgrandchildren, Michelle and Amy; brothers, Wayne Walls and wife, Judy, and Robert Walls and wife, Marie; many nieces and nephews. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved aunt and friend, Nellie Marguerite Watson, who died peacefully at Riverside Court, Woodstock, NB on January 13th, 2018. She was born December 27th, 1923 in Maxwell, York County, New Brunswick, daughter of the late Lee Watson and Alma (Graham) Watson. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by six brothers; Earl (Verona), Everett (Gladys), Floyd, Clifford, Clayton and an infant brother, Robert Lee. Four sisters; Freda (Frank) Graham, Thelma (Milo) Anderson, Eloise Watson and Ferne (Robert) Flemming. She was also predeceased by a special friend and sister-in-law Colleen Watson. She is survived by a brother-in-law, Robert Flemming of Fredericton, NB and by many nieces and nephews. Several other nieces and nephews have predeceased her.Nellie graduated from Woodstock High School and attended Normal School in Fredericton, NB to become a teacher. She taught for 36 years in the schools of New Brunswick and Quebec. She was a High School math teacher and retired from Riverview High School, Riverview, New Brunswick in 1982.Nellie loved life and she liked to travel. One of her trips was to Scotland to attend a nephew’s wedding. On another trip abroad with family and friends she visited Scotland, England, Wales and Ireland. She also went on a trip across Canada and once to the Bahamas. But first and foremost in her life was her beloved family and friends and if anyone was sick or in need, she was the first one to be at their side to lend a helping hand. She loved to read and you could find a book or two in every room in her home. She loved animals and was known to adopt stray cats, and as part of that interest she worked as a volunteer for the SPCA for several years by wrapping Christmas gifts at the Eaton’s Mall, Highfield Square in Moncton, NBHer family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Riverside Court for the care that she received while a resident there. Also, to Dr. Alborg and the Extra Mural Nurses, thank you.As per Nellie’s request, there will be no visitation. Cremation will take place and a graveside service will take place at a later date.

North Lake, April 20 - It is with sadness we are called up to record the death of one of our most esteemed and dearly beloved young people in the person of May, only and dearly beloved daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Wetmore, who entered into rest on Saturday, April 6, 1907.
Although deceased had been in poor health for some time, it only became apparent since Christmas that she was rapidly fading away.
It was a pleasure to converse with her. All were greeted with a smile of welcome. She never murmured or complained, but placed her whole trust in risen Savior and although her last moments were those of severe suffering, she tried to cheer her weeping parents and friends, telling them it was all sunshine with her and when at last the Death Angel summoned her she smiled an approval as her spirit took flight to brighter scenes and fairer climes to be forever with the blest.
It seemed good to look upon the dead form as it gave forth the divine assurance of a life beyond this vale of tears.
The funeral took place on Wednesday 10th inst.
A great many attended although it was extremely difficult as the worst storm of the season raged, making traveling almost impossible. Many, including near relatives, started but were unable to get there.
Miss Wetmore allied herself with the Episcopal church at Canterbury, NB, about three years ago and has been a consistent member ever since.
She was visited by her pastor, Rev. J.E. Flewelling quite frequently.
She is sincerely mourned by her loving parents, including her aged grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Boone, one brother, uncles, aunts, cousins, and a large circle of friends who kindly ministered to her every want.

From the notes of Pearl Howe --
One of the Best Known Residents of York County - Born in England 81 Years Ago.Dec 18, 1935 News of the death at Lancaster Heights, Saint John, yesterday of Thomas W. Wetmore, aged 81, of North Lake, came as a shock to his legion of friends in Fredericton and other parts of New Brunswick, the State of Maine, and other places in Canada and the United States.
Mr. Wetmore was born in Basingstoke, England, and when a comparatively young man came to New Brunswick, locating at Saint John. He also worked in Fredericton upon the construction of the original Provincial Normal School erected in 1877 and burned several years ago. For some years he was employed in Saint John as a mason and later moved to North Lake, York county, where he was employed by the Canadian Customs. Some time later he was appointed immigration officer and in both positions he carried out his duties most faithfully, giving satisfaction to the Dominion Government and to the many people with whom he had dealings.
In 1910 Mr. Wetmore was elected to represent the Parish of North Lake at the York Municipal Council and again in 1911. He filled his duties most acceptably and such a hold did municipal affairs have for him that he never missed a session of the council, coming to Fredericton in January and July each year and attending the sessions. He always gave a short address to the councillors and his semi-annual visits were always bright spots of the meeting. He did not confine his visits to Fredericton to twice a year but was but was a frequent visitor, making his home at the Waverly Hotel. 'Uncle Tom', as he was known to his friends, always a smile and greeting, giving kindly advice where needed and always ready with a joke or story. He was in Fredericton a few weeks ago and was then looking forward to again coming to the Council meeting in January.
Covered 41,000 Miles With Horse.
Mr. Wetmore a few years ago owned a black mare named "Gladys", and he claimed he and his mare had covered 41,000 miles in the discharge of his duties. He told many interesting stories of the time he did his work by the aid of "Gladys". And it was with sorrow he saw her died a few years ago. He was known to tourist from the United States and Canada who frequently visited Skiff lake and North Lake, and he and his wife, "Aunt Maggie" who died a few years ago, were noted for their hospitality and kindness to the stranger within their gates.
He was a follower of race-horses and always was at Fredericton, Woodstock and Houlton when the racing season was on. He was a kind, courteous gentleman, a member of the old school which is fast disappearing and one who will be missed not only in his own community, but where ever he was known and in his death York County has lost one loved and admired for many fine qualities of heart and mind. His was a good and useful life, filled with many acts of kindness to his fellow man.
Met With Accident Mr. Wetmore met with an accident about a year ago when he was thrown from an automobile while coming to Fredericton with a party of friends. He did not fully recover from the injuries received, although he never complained. Mr. Wetmore went to Saint John last week to visit at the home of relatives, Mr and Mrs. T.W. Perry and it was at their home he suffered a heart attack yesterday which resulted in his death. He is survived by a son, Councillor Arthur C. Wetmore, with whom he lived since the death of Mrs. Wetmore, a few years ago.
The body was taken last night to his home at North Lake for interment . The funeral taking place this afternoon.
