A very pretty wedding was solemnized at the home of the bride’s parents, when their daughter, Margaret Mae McMinn, was united in marriage to Melvin LeRoy Lawson, of Green Lake, on August 18, at 4 p.m.
The bride was becoming attired in a dress of white silk crepe de chine with a bridal veil of silk net, complete with a orange blossom wreath.
The couple were attended by her sister, Miss Alma, who wore a dress of Copenhagen satin de chine; and by her cousin, Walter Whitcomb, of Boston, Mass. (His attired was not worth mentioning) The Rev Mr. Bennett of Richmond officiated according to the rites of the Church of England.
Tea was then served to a large number of guests , after which the bridge and groom left by automobile enroute for the home, Green Lake, amid the many good wishes of their friends.
A number of very nice presents were received. The groom’s gift to the bride was a gold locket and chain.

1980 - Over 230 well-wishers gathered at the Fosterville Elementary school on April 12, to honor Mrs Florence Foster on the occasion of her 90th birthday.A retired school teacher, Mrs Foster welcomed several former pupils. She obtained her education quite differently from today's teachers, such as her grandson, Leonard Foster, who will graduate within weeks from the University of New Brunswick with his teaching degree; or her daughter, Alice Graham, who also received a Bachelor of Education to teach. One of nine children born to Thomas and Catherine McNerlin of Maxwell, Mrs Foster was born and raised on the farm which her father hacked out of the forest with an axe and elbow grease. As a child she often walked miles to the next dirstrict to attend classes because some schools were closed during winter months or for whole terms. Most of the teachers only had a local licence without formal training.Yet in 1907, Mrs Foster managed to go to Fredericton to attend Normal School. She left school again at the age of 17 to support herself by teaching. After three terms of teaching, she returned to Fredericton and graduated from Normal School in June, 1910. (Note: the Normal School later became Teacher's College and was located on Queen Street at York across from the City Hall. Today it houses the Courts.) After graduating, she held teaching psitions in various New Brunswick schools. In 1918 she was granted a U.S. Maine licence for seven years. She returned to teach in the Pemberton Ridge/Green Mountain area where she met and married Elias Foster, the local blacksmith, and 13th child of a blacksmith.Although starting her family at the age of 35, she gave birth to five healthy children in the following ten years. She did not again teach until 1950 when she had as her students the children of former pupils in many cases. When she retired in 1957 at the age of 67 her teaching career had spanned 50 years. For many years Mrs Foster served as organist, treasurer, superintendent and Sunday School teacher of the Green Mountain Baptist church. Although her sight for reading is poor, she still teaches an Adult Bible Class making use of an excellent memory of bible verses memorized in her youth. The old Foster homestead at Green Mountain (long past its centenarian mark), where her late husband and five children were born, is still her home. She enjoys visiting close friends and family. Alert and able to care for all her own needs she can still whip up a batch of cookies or put out a wash with ease.Present at the party were her three sons, Gordon, Green Mountain (Note: with whom Flossie lived), Marvin, North Lake, Curtis, Canterbury and one daughter, Kathryn, Canterbury. Another daughter, Mary Alice Graham, Winnipeg, was unable to attend because of illness, but sent flowers and a message.Mrs Foster has 17 grandchildren and all except Douglas and Brian Graham, Winnipeg, and Capt Boyd Foster, currently on course in BC, were able to attend.Guests arrived from 2 until 9 p.m. and Mrs Foster remained in attendance the full time greeting each arrival personally. It was a memorable day.

It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our charismatic and creative son and brother, Thomas David Morgan on Saturday, December 30, 2017. Tom was born September 22, 1998 in Fredericton, NB He loved art, music, playing basketball, working out, his dogs, volunteering for the Red Cross, and spending time with his friends and family. We will greatly miss his quick wit, inquisitive mind, musicality, impeccable and unique sense of style, and his kindness to others. He is survived by his father (Mark) and “Steph-mom” (Stephanie); his mother, Angela (Byron); two brothers, Samuel (Lauren) and Jonathon; as well as many beloved family members and friends.

Dot Harding Notes, Jan 2004 - Carl and his first wife Dora Bartlett had 5 children: Jerome C. Mott, b April 27, 1917 Reginald Walter Mott, Sr., b March 12, 1919 Donald Bartlett Mott, b Aug 29, 1921 Josephine Ruth Mott, b Nov 14, 1915 Evelyn Mott, b April 22, 1920 Carl and his second wife Zella had one daughter (I think I have this right) Annie Elaine Mott, became Annie Dumais, and married a Wyman. (Her mother must have had her late in life, or I might be missing a link here. Zella's DOB is 1884, Annie's DOB is abt 1933... I'll have to recheck this relationship, but I know my mother has always referred to Annie as Uncle Carl's daughter.... ummm...) Jerome lives in Bucksport, has several children and grandchildren. My mother had an opportunity to chat with him this fall. Within the last 18 months, he had experienced the death of his wife, her brother, his two sisters and another relative of some sort. He lives in Bucksport, Maine. I think he ran the hardware store.Reggie died "young" of cancer. His wife Bernice (that "another relative" just mentioned above) died within the last 1 1/2 years. They had six sons - many still in Millinocket with offspring. Bernice was a happy soul. She crochetted (?sp) a pink outfit for me when I was born because she didn't have anyone to do "pink" for as she had all boys.I don't know much about Don's family. His son David had red hair and might be in his mid to late 50s now. I believe there were multiple wives for Don and with hers, his and ours for children. Bernice kept track of this family.Josephine was married twice. Her son Bud lives in Arizona and is retired. Three sons by her second husband are osteopathic doctors in Maine and Massachusetts. Although they have some children, there numbers are small.Evelyn was living in Hawaii when I contacted her by mail. She reflected that the "good ol life wasn't good for everyone", that if someone wrote a story about her life it might be entitled "Thornbirds", she was more interested in making history than learning about history, etc. She was enjoying photography at the local hospital, some volunteer work, her daughter and granddaughter, and had escaped the last hurricane. She was content on not reflecting on the past and had no desire to return to Lakeview Street (where the Mott homestead was) I believe Carl's first wife took the youngest with her and left Carl, then returned and traded - taking the girls and leaving the boys. I don't think life had been easy for any of them. Although I believe Aunt Lue might have had a hand in spoiling at least one of them when they lived at the Mott home with their father and grandmother. When Carl remarried and moved to Millinocket, I think some of the boys stayed behind - at "Grammie's", at Uncle Milford's.

Dot Harding Notes, Jan 2004 Aunt Rose, "Bob", Aunt Dot - taught briefly in Lincoln before heading to Connecticut where she lived a full life socially and professionally. She never married, but always remained a part of the family back home. She and Beecher were able to share parts of lives with each other in Connecticut. Although she was in a secretarial position, she was the "right arrm" to several of her employers and was held in high regard by the companies that she worked for.Upon retiring, she returned to Lincoln and lived with her widowed brother Gene until she died due to a stroke. She played a very important part of my life - 1 of 3 "maid" aunts of mine. She was a bit more sophisticated than people in Lincoln. She was aware of things beyond this tiny town. She encouraged kids and always welcomed the opportunity to give them something - take them out for a meal, a plant, a toy... It got so bad that I couldn't tell her I liked something because she would buy it for me.

Dot Harding notes, Jan 2004 Hazen and Jenny (Berry) Mott had two sons - Byron Porter Mott, b June 20, 1907 and Markie Mott, b. June 9, 1905.Ha, my Mom always told me there was a Markie Mott and I have no info beyong his DOB.Byron's son Randolph has been quite responsive to queries. He lives in Connecticut with his wife Judy who is from Burlington, Maine (neighbor town of Lincoln), has 5 children and grandchildren of his own. Randolph was a central figure in a book called Hamburger Hill, an account of a battle in the Korean War which I must plead stupidity about. Two other Byron sons - Bernard and Byron, Jr - died the year they were borNByron's fourth son Ronald still lives in Lincoln. To my knowledge, Randolph and Ron's mother Luentha, w/o Byron, still lives at Cummings Nursing Home in Howland. One of my neighbors shared that she was quite the artist.

More notes from Dot Harding, Lincoln, ME, Jan 2004 This section is created by notes on the computer and off the top of my head as I knew many of them.
I was always impressed that my grandmother had 14 siblings after I saw bits of Cheaper By the Dozen movie. My thoughts involved a table with seven children on both sides of the table at a meal. Older, I now realize I didn't account for those that died and never reached a minor's age, that Sophie was married nine years before my grandmother was born - in fact, she was married before the last 10 children were born had begun her family - contemporaries of those last siblings. The generations - children and grandchildren of Ruth and Ed Mott - were mixed.
These notes are not complete - due to unfinished stories not added to the paper.1) Sophia Priscilla Mott Known to the family as "Sophie". In 1881 NB Census, Sophia is listed as 5 yrs old.
According to her obituary, at the time of her death Sophie had 19 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. She had lived in McAdam for 45 years and died after a lengthy illness Her husband was always referred to as Dan by the Mott family. Many assumed his name was Daniel. His gravestone indicates otherwise (and it was confirmed by his daughter Frances) that his given name was actually Andrew.
Their children descendants live/have lived in Harvey, McAdam and Fredricton, NB.
.
2) Walter Ernest Mott Known to the family as "Walter". In 1881 NB Census, Walter is listed as 3 yrs old.
Walter was the instigator of numerous entertaining moments, stories, episodes in his short life.
I believe he and his brother in law Alvah Libby were responsible for given a molasses enema to a cow just prior to a parade for the Springfield Fair - creating a humorous walk.
At another fair, the two teamed up with two orphan cubs and would challenge other young men to "box" with the bears.3) Louise Delilah Mott Known tothe family as "Lue." In 1881 NB Census, "Lousia" is listed as 8/12 (July) of age which would indicate that Mr. Hiram Veysey, the enumerator, visited in March 1881.
Lue is listed as a resident of Lincoln, Maine at the time of his sister Sophia's obituary in January 1949 and in his brother Carl's obituary February 1949. Her husband was from Mattawamkeag and it is likely that they lived there at one time. Her husband was a cook in lumber camps, so her living arrangements may have varied from time to time (needs more research). She and Ernie lived with her mother after her mother's stroke. In later years and prior to her death, she lived with her youngest sister Effie.
Lue was a great card player. She'd sit for hours and play solitaire on the couch. She also played Canasta. She was known as a great card player. One day, it was discovered that she not only was excited for the upcoming card party and would prepare Effie's dining room, she also would tilt the mirror over Effie's buffet so that when she sat opposite her partner and the buffet - Lue would be able to see her partner's cards. She would play cards while visiting in Millinocket as well as in Lincoln. Did the her Millinocket hosts have an accomodating mirror also? As a child I was told that she and Ernie had quite a talented dog who would sing and carry lit cigarettes between Ernie and Lue without wetting the paper.
She was instrumental in helping raise some of her brother Carl's children when they lived at Ruth and Ed's home.
In Effie Mott Potter's Longfellow Birthday Book there is a note on a inside blank page: "Lue lived at Eel River Lake, Canada until 7 years old." 4) Stanley Milford Mott ******* the family bible listed him as "Sidney Milford", not "Stanley Milford". His name on his gavestone is Milford S. Mott I am sure others have referred to him as Milford Stanly - but, further research is needed.
Milford was a mason, carpenter. He lived on Pleasant Street, nearly within yelling distance of his parents' last home. I believe Lincoln was always his home. He is listed as a resident of Lincoln, Maine at the time of his sister Sophia's obituary in January 1949 and in his brother Carl's obituary February 1949.
Whenever anyone mentioned Milford, there would be a smile and usually a good natured story.
One story occured at his sister Jospephine's home while he was repairing a chimney on the old Libby homestead. He had spent the morning running their youngest son Clyde Rodney down the ladder to his toolkit for one item and back up the ladder, then another item. Aside from the multiple trips and the search for the correct tool or item, Rodney had to contend with a little dog that would nip at him as it guarded the toolbox. Milford had quite a chuckle. While he was taking a break, Rodney went to the top of the ladder. When Milford returned to work, Rodney took a "whiz" (urinated) on an unsuspecting Milford. Rodney was able to escape and stayed hidden for the remainder of the day. There was an all out search for the culprit in the evening. He was found sound asleep in a sleigh up on the rafters of the barn. He was about 5 or 6 at the time and Rodney's older brother Arthur was quite proud that he had outwitten the sly uncle.
Another story involves a job that Milford took on for a family whose reputation for paying wasn't 100%. No worry. Milford undertook the project and built the chimney. As others cautioned him, his bill had not been paid as agreed. Fall and cooler weather arrived. The family couldn't get the smoke to go up the chimney. It flooded the home. One of the youngesters was sent to fetch Milford. Milford assured the man of the house that as soon as the bill was paid, Milford was sure that that smoke would go up the chimney. Regretfully, the man paid the bill in full. Milford climbed the roof with a rock and dropped it down the chimney. He had cemented a piece of glass across the chimney as a safeguard for payment. He left the family with a functioning chimney.
Milford was a frequent visitor of the local movie hall. He would sit and rewatch movie after movie. When questioned about what was his favorite part of a movie, he responded that it was in those frames where there was a man and a woman left alone in privacy and the camera would panoff to the sky, the clouds, or some other setting. He enjoyed wondering what the man and woman were doing at that particular moment.
His father-in-law was a familiar Penobscot Indian in Lincoln. His wife was associated with the Methodist Church throughout her lifetime. Milford was known for always bringing something home - pig, puppy, kids...5) Edward Hazen Mott He was known as "Hazen".6) Alvia Mott He is the only sibling with only one name. As stated earlier, there is no gravestone for Alvia in Mattawamkeag, Maine with the family. His death is recorded as 1887. The next child siblings' listing was born in 1888 in Maine. It is reasonable to assume that Alvia, an infant, died and was buried in New Brunswick prior to the family's resettling in Maine. Not surprisingly, there is no gravesite indicated for Alvia in the Fosterville, NB cemeteries.7) Nicolas Beecher Mott To the family, he was known as "Beecher". His wife fondly referred to him as "Bee".
His daughter Ruth Mott Brown shared that Beecher's birthplace was Mattawamkeag, although some records indicate Winn. This information is not available through the Family Bible. He was a Private in the U.S. Army, served in Field Artillery, West Point. He was a charter member, Olive Branch No. 84, AF and AM. He was affiliated with the Congregational Church. He worked at United Illuminating Company in New Haven and enjoyed golf and travel.
Beecher is listed as a resident of New Haven, Connecticut at the time of his sister Sophia's obituary in January 1949 and in his brother Carl's obituary February 1949. He is listed as a resident of Hamden, Connecticut at the time of his brother Burns' death in 1961. His daughter moved to California shortly before his retirement. Upon retirement he and his wife resettled in California. His wife Clara was a member, actually a charter member, of Palestine Chapter No. 67 O.E.S. She was affiliated with the Congregational Church.
In the 1950's-1960's, the couple owned a Chiwhawha (?sp) and a parakeet that would travel with them. The little dog nearly sat in Uncle Beecher's shirt or jacket pocket and would howl a song upon command. At home, the parakeet had some freedom of the house. He would sit and pick out Aunt Clara's hairpins saving her the bother.8) Ethel Josephine Mott Fondly known as "Jose" or "Josie". Her gravestone has the name "Josie E., 1888-1970" Jose is listed as a resident of Lincoln, Maine at the time of his sister Sophia's obituary in January 1949, in his brother Carl's obituary February 1949, and in his brother Burns' obituary in 1961.
A granddaughter Doris Bailey Perry Owen recalls that she was told of her grandmother Jose Libby's enthusiasm for horseshoes and that she did very well at it. Jose also was a good bowler when she and her husband Alvah owned the Lakeside Bowling alley.
Jose was quite a cook, maybe out of necessity. She would go fishing as quickly as Alvah for a meal - and she could hunt too.Alvah was an avid hunter and fisherman. He built the Lakeside Bowling are in Lincoln. Some simply called him a "dickerer". He apparently dickered quite well. Although he never seemed to have a steady job, there was always enough food on the table for his large family and any other people that happened to stop by at mealtime. He helped set up a bait shop based on the honor system. He also created "Libby Trailer Park" which still exists, down over the hill behind Warsaw Circle (previously called Highland Avenue Extension.) He died of diabetes and old age.
"Alvie" had lost a thumb. He would tell multiple stories about the loss. My favorite one was that he had hooked the biggest fish imaginable. Before he could land it, it bit his thumb off and swam away.
His brother in law Arthur had to think a considerable time. His best recall is that Alvah was involved in moving a building by using logs as rollers. His thumb got caught, crushed and/or amputated.Alvah's Libby line has a rich history that has been researched by several people. This line originated in England in 1602 with the birth of John Libby, eight previous generations to Alvah K. Libby.
This gentleman arrived in America about 1636 and settled at Black Point, now part of Scarborough.
His son John was driven to Portsmouth by the Indians during King Philip's War, 1690.
His son Benjamin restarted the slow route north to Maine as he went to Kittery and S. Berwick His son Daniel, Berwick, was active during the Revolutionary War.
His son John, a farmer, was still in Berwick.
His son Ebenezer was a lumberer in Winslow, a farmer in Albion.
His son Thomas S. was a carriage maker who moved to Lincoln and took part in the Civil War.
His son Frank was Alvah K. Libby's father.
All these gentlemen fathered eight to twelve children, therefore there is a multitude with and without the surname of Libby who can trace their heritage to the emigrant John Libby.
(per Libby information shared by Melany Libby Thurlow) 9) Leslie Burns Mott "Burns Leslie" when his mother wanted his attention. He settled in Millinocket, working in the local mill. He is listed as a resident of Millinocket at the time of his sister Sophia's obituary in January 1949 and in his brother Carl's obituary February 1949.
His obituary reveals that: Burns was a resident of Millinocket for nearly 40 years. He died unexpectedly at his home, at 28 Lincoln Street, in Millinocket. Until his retirement three years ago, he was employed by the Great Northern Paper Company. He was a member of Molunkus Lodge of Masons, Molunkus Valley OES and Pipers and Steamfitters Union.
His son Bob boasted to me that at the Woodville farm, Burns was left behind by his father and siblings who went off to their respectful chores/jobs. He was abt 6 and realized there was a moose that had ventured quite close to the house. He obtained a gun, rested it on a nearby log and killed the deer. When his father returned, he proudly showed the dead corpse which had to be dressed out by his father.10) Dora Rosetta Mott In the Family Bible her name appears to be Dora Rosetta. In many of the family's early documentation, her name consistantly appears Dora Rosella - maybe the L's in Rosella had been crossed in the Family Bible. At home and to the family, she was known as "Rose". Professionally in Connecticut, she used the name Dorothy R. Mott. There, in Connecticut, her friends fondly called her "Bob" as she was among the first who had the bobstyle haircut. On her return to Lincoln after retirement, she preferred the name "Aunt Dot" by the younger generation. The name - Rose, Bob, Dot - revealed the timeframe of a relationship. (ref: DAH Rose is listed as a resident of New Haven, Connecticut at the time of her sister Sophia's obituary in January 1949, in her brother Carl's obituary February 1949, and in her brother Burns' obituary in 1961.
Bernice Mott shared in 1994 that the boys loved to have Aunt Rose visit. They would often ask her if they were being too noisey. She would reply that "I just turn a deaf ear." Because she was not married and was relatively financially secured, Aunt Dot, or Aunt Rose, would frequently shower her nieces and nephews with gifts.11) Jean Purlie Mott His name on his cemetery stone is Eugene P. Mott. He was known to the family and the Lincoln community as "Gene".
He was a carpented by trade, liked to fish (in fact, he courted his second wife with a string of perch on their first date) and spend weekends at "the Flats", a dancehall between Lincoln and Millinocket.
Gene is listed as a resident of Lincoln, Maine at the time of his sister Sophia's obituary in January 1949, in his brother Carl's obituary February 1949, and in his brother Burns' obituary in 1961.
As a young boy of abt 5 or 6, Gene would recall that a car (the first he'd seen) drove into the Woodville farmyard. The driver of the car told his father Ed that he was a cousin from New York. Gene was impressed by the welldressed girls with bows in their hear in the back seat. A boy of abt his same age got out of the car and had knickers and shoes on. Having always had hand-me-downs, Gene thought every little boy and girl went barefoot in the summer.12) Carl Thaddius Mott Carl is listed as a resident of Millinocket in his sister Sophia's obituary published January 8, 1949.
His descendants still live in Millinocket.13) Budd Claudis Mott. Jose's children believe he choked to death.14) Flossie Mildred Mott "Floss" is listed as a resident of Bangor, Maine at the time of her sister Sophia's obituary in January 1949 and in her brother Carl's obituary February 1949. She is listed as a resident of Old Town, Maine in brother Burns' obituary in 1961.
Floss was the last surviving (of 15) sibling. At the time of her death she had 4 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 14 great gerat greandchildren.
Flossie legally had her name changed to Florence Mildred as she detested the name "Flossie". Her hair turned completely white and, in photos, most resembled her mother. She was noted for the impromptu nursing care she would provide for ill members of the family.
Floss shared that she married quite young. Her mother cautioned her about how children were created - saying that "Your father likes to make the babies." In a manuscript written for a grandchild's school project, Floss indicates that her husband Howard was of Scotch and Irsh descent. He had moved to Lincoln, Maine from Blackville, New Brunswick with his father, brothers and sisters on October 12, 1912. He was an automobile mechanic and car salesman by trade. He too liked to fish.15) Effie Ruth Mott Effie is listed as a resident of Lincoln, Maine at the time of his sister Sophia's obituary in January 1949, in his brother Carl's obituary February 1949, and in her brother Burns' obituary in 1961.
Effie was the last to leave her mother's nest. Her place of residence was decided by her husband's work demands. She lived in Massachusetts for awhile, Bangor - with Floss - for awhile, then back to Lincoln to a road that sat between the Mott homestead and Mattanawcook Lake.

Dot Harding Notes, Jan 2004 Effie and Arthur Potter had four children - two died as infants. My Mom - Joyce Ella Potter, b Aug 26, 1930 Dalton Arthur Potter, b & d June 10, 1936 Elliott Roland Potter, b Nov 8, 1938 Kennard Lee Potter, b & d Feb 13, 1940 I believe these four are the youngest Mott grandchildren. My mother married C.Harold Harding in 1949. They still live in Lincoln, have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, enjoy traveling (although they have slowed down in the last two years) and their grandchildren - now numbering 6.There are 4 of us - Dorothy (me) - 1974 graduate of University of Maine at Portland, currently a nurse at the local hospital, have a daughter - Effie - and a partner with extended kids and their kids. My next sister says that I am the only one she knows that will be happiest when I die. I will 1) either know everyone that has gone before me, or 2) will be interested in meeting them and placing them in their appropriate limb on the family tree.Betty - 1976 graduate of University of Maine at Farmington, a teacher at the local Jr. High, married with one dgtr. If you want a particular setting or atmosphere, meat soaked (I think it's called sautee'd or something) and slowly cooked on the grill so you can cut it with a fork, something cute and inexpenside - but homemade - to give as a present, or what the shoe stores in a 50 mile radius have - call Betty. Her only dislike is for Martha Stewart...Holly - graduate of Husson and handles billing for a local doctor, married w/ two daughters. Family rule - don't mess with Holly. One day you will wake up and realize she's not only gotten even with you -- she's ahead of you. She is organized and likes to be in control.Steve - a graduate of UM at Orono, a civil engineer and vice president of Qest in S. Portland, married with a son who is still a toddler and a red-haired daughter - new this fall. Steve still runs local marathons. We do the "family thing" - celebrating together - Thanksgiving, Christmas, January birthdays, Easter, Mother's day and Mom's birthday (if she's in town and we've been known to celebrate it without her). We attend each other's children's functions - school and otherwise.I felt honored last Easter to be sitting at the Honors table (all four granddaughters had straight A's for four semesters). Admittedly, I was a squatter. I wouldn't have made the table otherwise. And, of course this year, college has brought us back to realistic expectations in school. But, it was unique at the time.Retired, Elliott lives in Connecticut w/ his wife Bonnie Haynes in a recently purchased home (no longer in the city). They have three daughters.Cindy has three children, one of which has two children - making Elliott a great grandfather.
Sue is married, has three children, college and HS age.
Jenny is married, has two children. Jenny's family share their home (a two family home) with Elliott and Bonnie (or, vice versa). Jenny's son keeps his grandfather busy.Elliott "Bean" was a High School Basketball "star" and still plays weekly at the tender age of 65. He says he can still outrun many of the 40 year olds. Bonnie continues to paint - and, is quite good at it - enough to win awards.Uncle Bean and Aunt Bonnie own a camp in East Lincoln which they frequent many times a year. Their children and grandchildren continue to come to Maine to swim, kayak, sail, jet ski, cook marshmellows and hotdogs, have a singalong.... except for Cindy's significant other. David prefers the city, running water, a "real" flush, and stores that stay open beyond 5pm. (We haven't told him Wal Mart has moved into town.) He has no use for the State Bird, the crafty Misquito, either. There - I think I have gone from Sophia to Effie with minimal glitches and there are some - I'm sure. One can easily see that this story could go on and on and on. I have shared the descendants as such. In some instances I have more info than offered, in others you got all I have to share. My goal would be to establish a website for The Mott - hoping to capture and stay in contact with those extended, particularly lost, relatives. Whereas Ed and Ruth Mott are only 3 generations away from me, I am sure that there are six generations - if not more - for the older family members. I realize that this family is no longer a "Fosterville", but the matriach that brought her family to Maine considered Fosterville home.My next installment will go the other way in time. That will involve contradictions and more questions, and is much more limited... and shorter.-- Dottie

Dot Harding Notes, Jan 2004 Jose (Mott) and Alvah Libby stayed locally in Lincoln and raised a large family. It is because of this branch I am related to 1/2 of Lincoln probably.Beatrice Libby b. August 11, 1907, d in infancy I believe.Lottie M. Libby b. May 08, 1909, m a Sweet and had at least two childrenn, possibly three. The Sweets lived in Lincoln Center and have numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren in the area.Leon Alvah Libby b.September 30, 1910, m.Georgia May McGibney. They had four sons - Ronald, Robert, Barry and Jimmy - three were in law enforcement (State Police and Border Patrolmen), one an educator and presently active in Lincoln politics. It would be safe to say that May brought the boys up primarily alone. Two of the boys live in the neighborhood of the "Mott" home, and one lives in Lee. There grandchildren have families. Leon remarried an Avis Millett and they had two daughters - Lynn and Jacalyn. Avis is in Cummings Nursing Home. I'm not sure where the daughters are. When Leon and Avis were married they lived in various sites about the country before returning to Maine where he died.
Robert Carlton Libby, b.March 06, 1912, m Amy Ireland and lived on a farm at Fish Hill where their youngest son Walter continued with raising cows and tried his hand at a zoo for a few years. The couple had 10 children. Some of these kids were plagued by a congenital syndrome that left them blind and they succombed to diseases. One of their daughters and husband are active in the local Historical Society. Again, there are grandchildren and great grandchildren.Floyd A. Libby, b May 12, 1913, m. Lelia _______. They had at least four children who I've met in my professional work. They have children, grandchildren, possibly another generation starting. Lelia was brought up an only child and "just loved" becoming a member of such a large, busy family. Floyd still lives in Lincoln and a year or so ago, still made some mean biscuits.Arthur Raymond Libby, b February 13, 1915, d this winter. He was married to Zelma Cummings and moved onto the Libby homestead at Stump Pond. Arthur had one surviving daughter Janice who lives in Washington state and had three sons, now grown. They adopted another daughter Janice who lives across the road from the farm. She has a daughter in college and a daughter in high school.
Arthur was quite the story teller, tease, and quite intelligent. He had a lot of wit and never got taken on a transaction. There are numerous stories about him. He managed to get into the local paper - shooting a coyote that was stalking his cows, raising chickens under his bed that the home health aide was learning to care for, buying and selling animals when he no longer could get to the barn himself, and marking their 60+ anniversary before his wife's death.Irene Viola Libby, b May 16, 1916, m Gordon Bailey. They had five daughters, 50+ grandchildren, and were easily into great grandchildren. They traveled across the country throughout life, with their girls in tow. Many of their descendants are scattered about Lincoln. There family is scattered - Florida, Massachusetts, Kansas, Maine....Hilda Jenevene Libby, b. August 16, 1917, m. Lewis Washburn in a double wedding ceremony with Irene and Gordon. Unlike the Baileys, Hilda's family was limited to three children - Carolyn, Audrey and David. They have two to three children apiece, and those children have children. Other than Audrey, the family members are active Lincoln residents.Vernon Walter Libby, b. April 01, 1920 lives just up the road from the "Mott" home. He and his first wife had two children - Brent and Brenda. I don't know where they have settled. Vernon's first wife died, he remarried and that wife has died. He ran the Lincoln Color Center - paints, carpeting... now owns apartments closeby. He lives next door to the last home his parents (Jose and alvah) lived in when Arthur moved to the farm.Clyde Rodney Libby, b. October 10, 1924, m. Gladys Mary Scott "Scottie". Rodney has acquired his father's knack for dickering. He runs a bait shop and is semi retired. They have two daughters - Jan and Mary. Jan and her husband again live in that old neighborhood of the Motts - across the street from Milford's home. Jan has adopted two boys recently. The four make a lovely family.A book could be written about this crowd of people. Jose and Alvah owned a dance hall, converted to a bowling alley that was gutted in one of the two fires that Lincoln suffered two years ago. (Downtown looks like an arsonist's field day occurred). One person could be kept quite busy following the lines down through the descendants of this group - ie., Irene had 50+ grandchildren - and there are 8 more siblings.... and 3 more generations and growing... daily now.I would sit at the Junior High at a concert, at a ballgame... and count 6 to 8 Mott descendants performing. They sing together, were on the same teams, and are friends... all able to trace their ancestry back to Ruth and Ed Mott. Keep in mind, the Jr High only covers 3 different grades. And further more, the Jr High is physically almost in the back dooryard of the Mott homestead. There is so much that can be said about this latter Libby folk, I wouldn't know where to draw the boundaries for such a discussion. I can say if I were to drive through Lincoln, nearly on every street, I'd be able to point out a relative of some sort and I don't know where many of them actually live in town.

Jacob B. Mott was the son of Adam Mott and Sarah Belyea of Wickham's Parish, Queen's County, off the east side of the St. John River. In 1876, the historian E. Stone Wiggins declared "All the Mott family in Queen's County are the descendants of Adam" and was reprinted as such in the St. John's Watchman.
Jacob's paternal grandfather Jonathan Mott was a Loyalist whose ancestral home was Hempstead, New York. In 1783, Jonathan drew land in St. John City, but never lived there. He preferred land about the St. John River.
Jacob's maternal grandfather Joseph Belyea was also a Loyalist from Tarrytown, New York . He also arrived in NB in 1783 with his brother James. They also settled on the St. John. No doubt, Belyea's Cove was named for this family.

Gene and Maude (Sturgeon) Mott had two children: Geraldine Amanda Mott, b March 29, 1917 and Edward Eugene Mott, b May 7, 1919.Geraldine and her husband Don Noddin had one daughter Sally who now lives in Millinocket, has 3 daughters and grandchildren. Don has died and Geraldine still lives literally in the back dooryard of the Mott homestead - one of my neighbors, or - in the school dooryard depending on your viewpoint. Her husband ran Don's Hot Dog Stand.Eddie and his wife Alma "Johnnie" Dow had one daughter Judy. Judy lives in the Lewiston/Auburn area of Maine. She has 3 children. I would assume she has grandchildren too. Eddie and Johnnie both died "early". What I remember about them, besides they were nice and always talked to me, was they smoked continuously.Gene's second wife Letitia Scott (his first had died) brought her grandson Michael Collin Kelley to the relationship. After Tish's death, Mike stayed with Gene who raised him. Mike says it was the best thing going - two bachelors living together, both sowing their oats on weekends. Needless to say, Mike is quite the cook and housekeeper. He credits Gene with his abilities. Otherwise, Mike might have starved and who can get a date if you're not clean and neat. Mike is a retired English teacher who enjoys the theater, now lives on the coast where he is semi-employed by a clothing company (a heavenly accomodation to him) and continues to be a perfectionist.

I believe Nina said he was a "blue" baby.Robert Burns Mott, b. August 10, 1915, d January 18, 1999. Bob married Eleanor Mae Taylor. Eleanor's brother married Bob's cousin Margaret Mott, dgtr of Walter Mott. (Got that?) They have two children Carole and Ted. Bob was responsible for the airport that is still running in Millinocket. After he had a pacemaker and could no longer be a "pilot", he built an ultralight and flew that for years - taking aerial photos. Bob worked at the Millinocket Mill and would walk to and from work. Eleanor knew that although it was a 5 minute walk, it might take Bob 3 hours to get home. Bob was quite the talker and story teller. He refused to be tape recorded by me - "I might want to change the story next time".To support his flying hobby, Bob would have his aerial photos developed, then visit the sites to try and sell them to the people whose homes were objects of the photos. He flew over Lincoln and took a picture of the Libby farm. He arrived on the Flat Iron at Arthur Libby's (Jose and Alvah's son) to sell him aerial photos of his farm. Although he had been there multiple times - particularly wiht his Dad and would stay overnight, Bob declared he didn't recall the farm, nor did he know his cousin Arthur. Arthur insisted Bob had to know him. Bob denied he did so much that Arthur questioned me if it was truly "the" Bob Mott. I know that both men died not knowing if Bob was telling the truth or not. (They both deserved the frustration and suspense.) In Bob's obituary, he requested to be buried in the cemetery, not in the spring. His last vehicle was a Volkswagon with orange wheels. He was infamous about town with his colorful bowties. And, as I said previously, he didn't look like a Mott. (He and I happen to share the same birthdate, he took me on my first plane ride with Aunt Lue, and every time I talked to him on the phone I would panic thinking I might be paying for the call.) His son shares Bob's love of aviation and has 3 sons himself (one of which was traveling in Alaska when my parents bumped into him on one of their RV carivan trips).Bob's daughter Carole lives in Kansas and has 3 sons.Nina Alice Mott, b October 21, 1916, m Brydon Blakely. They were able to celebrate their 51st anniversary before he died. The couple have 3 children and numerous grandchildren. One of their daughters was a challenge to Uncle Bob in being toasted at a party (a "wake") Bob had to celebrate his life before he was dead. He didn't want to miss the party. Nina has remarried and still lives in Millinocket. Occasionally, I hear from her.Bob's wife Eleanor still lives in Millinocket. She is a gracious, quiet lady who never got flustered by Bob it seems. Nina, Bob's sister, realized early in life that Bob demanded the limelight. Although she was aware of his needs, she would sit and shake her head.

Dot Harding Notes, Jan 2004 Lue and Ernie Shedd did not have children.
A nephew of Ernie's, Walter Shedd, shared that years ago during a cleanup or change in Post Office locations in Mattawamkeag - a postal employee gave him a post card that had fallen down between a desk and a wall. On it, Ernie has written several armonious details of plans he had for he and Lue when he returned home from work. Walter Shedd chuckled that that generation too were young and in love. Unfortunately, he discarded the letter.
Although the Shedds were a large contingency in Mattawamkeag - mostly having sons, Ernie appears to have joined the Mott crowd with ease.
My grandfather - Arthur Potter - would reflect on the Motts as a whole - after my grandmother's death. (I remember doing exercises with her and Jack La Lane and she taught me that one could count calories.... grrrr.. obviously, I have inherited some unattractice genes. But, I await the famine w/zeal.) Nonetheless, he said that he'd never met one (a Mott) that had been able to see their toes for quite awhile. He said that Walter Mott was particularly large. And, then had to retract part of the statement as Lue always was thin, sickly - but, he would add - the only one. (My grandfather was a man of few words so I was surprised that he offered this.)

Dot Harding Notes, Jan, 2004 Beecher Mott was the first offspring born in Maine. He and his wife Clara had two children: Everett Beecher Mott, b. Sept 1, 1913 in New Haven, Conn. and Ruth Emily Mott, b. March 2, 1926 in Hamden, Conn.Everett was married twice and had a son and daughter - Marilyn and David with his first wife Norma Holden. His second wife was a nurse who came from Douglaston, NB. Everett was a pharmacist. He, then his wife died in California.Ruth married a minister, Merton David Brown. They were associated with ministries in University settings, frequented the desert and Ruth was one to always send a Christmas letter that recalled the year's events. (I always thought that was fun.) She and Merton brought up Everett's two children and adopted a son "Rusty", b May 24, 1957. They would open their home to exchange students and adopted another son "Joey" before Merton's death. Ruth and Joey flew to Maine about 6 yrs ago. There has barely been any communication with Ruth for abt a year now. She had terrible arthritis. She and Joey (with a turtle of some sort) were living in Oklahoma nearer Merton's family.I am not aware of any grandchildren. I do know Everett's daughter "renamed" herself and was living in Greenwich Village.I don't recall meeting Everett, but I found Ruth to be very friendly (probably the role of a minister's wife). Of course, her mother was extremely nice too. A visit from them when they lived in Connecticut was always a bit exciting. Relatives from Millinocket, Old Town and Canada would come to my grandmother's. The house would be full. (Sometimes it was for a celebration, sometimes for a funeral) I would sit and entertain myself (I was suppose to be seen and not heard) by picking out who were Motts and who were not (spouses, friends, etc). The Mott men were bald and the family has a big bags under their eyes.... except for Burns' son Robert.I got pretty good at it. That's difficult for a 7 or 9 yr old - then to keep all the names matched with the right uncle - Beecher, Burns, Milford, Gene... Their wives always had a distinctive look, or voice that made them much easier to keep identified.

The beginning listing of the grandchildren of Ed and Ruth Foster Mott - limited and incomplete in some instances as not everyone responded to earlier queries for Family Group Sheets. The major source for names and DOBs is the Emerson Birthday Book that belonged to Ruth Foster Mott and the Longfellow Birthday Book that belonged to her youngest daughter Effie Mott Potter (my grandmother). To a certain extent, as Effie was born in 1901 and some of these entries began before 1901, I suspect that the older ones were probably copied from Ruth's BB. The newer ones, because Ruth had had a stroke before her death in 1943 leaving her blind and at least partially dependent on others, may have been added (in Ruth's book) by others (Lue Mott Shedd?). Effie may have added later entries in her book independently. But, all known grandchildren, a few unknown names which I suspect were grandchildren that were stillborn or died shortly after birth, and a couple great grandchildren are accounted for within these two sources - their names and DOBs.1) Children of Sophia Mott and Andrew "Dan" Speedy: Jessie M. Speedy b.July 01, 1893 Margaret Speedy b. February 10, 1898 Stella May Speedy b .April 19, 1900 George Albert Speedy b. February 16, 1903 Elizabeth M. Speedy b. March 04, 1906 Roy Speedy b. September 01, 1914 Ruth Speedy b. September 01, 1914 Frances Priscilla Speedy b.November 18, 1919 (In Ruth's Emerson Birthday Book a Charles Edward Speedy is listed on July 02 page, no date. Another Charles Edward Speedy entry appears on November 2 with 1896 given. In Harvey, New Brunswick at Manners-Sutton Cemetery with Sophia and Dan there is a stone for a Charles Edward Speedy indicating that he died in 1906. I suspect this is one, maybe a two children, belonging to the couple. One would fall between Jessie and Margaret's DOBs. My mother was only aware that Aunt Sophie had 6 daughters, one being a twin to Roy who died in 1914. Born in 1930, my mother obviously was a younger grandchild. She would be the first to admit she doesn't know all, but recalls hearing the names. The youngest daughter Frances had the distinction of being the first house on the left when one entered the Canadian MacAdam from Vanceboro, Maine. She died two or three years ago. I recall that she and Ruth would visit my grandmother in the 1950's. I would hear them laughing long after I had been sent to bed. Frances always was a happy, positive person who continued visiting her Libby cousins - Hilda Washburn and Lottie Sweet - to months before her death.) Off the top of my head, I know this family group (clan) would visit their Libby cousins on Frost Street, also known locally as "The Flat Iron" due to its lay out in reference to the town of Lincoln. The Libby homestead sits on a manmade pond, Stump Pond. There is a dam below the cow pastures where I'm sure kids would venture off - particularly the Libbys. One of the Libbys (I'd have to look up exactly which one it was) shared that on one visit, the kids went to the dam with Elizabeth who was in her teens and was dolled up in a light blue dress. The kids encouraged her out onto the dam boards for a walk. She lost her balance and slipped, physically unhurt, down over the sluice boards. The kids retrieved her - mud and all.My grandfather Arthur Potter, who would have been Sophie's brother-in-law, was a mail clerk and end up in Vanceboro atthe end of the line, in what they called a "dead head" - no work assignment to return home. He would cross the border into MacAdam and Harvey and spend the night. He would either "dead head" home on the next available train, or my mother and grandmother would drive over the next day and retrieve him. Consequently, his assurance that they always opened the door to him and were a lot of fun was authentic.Jessie m Francis (Frank) Knowlton and had at least two children - George and Frances Margaret m Clifford Anderson. I have a listing for three children - Ralph, Keith Roy and Archie.
Stella m William McIntyre. I have a listing for three children - William, Everett and Gladys Elizabeth m a Pierce. I have no children listed, although I am sure they exist(ed) Ruth m a MacDonald. I have Barbara Jean and Angus listed.
Frances m William Lewis Carvell. (She did respond with an extensive listing of her grandchildren and some ggc on Family Group pages) Their children: Roy William, Arlene Elizabeth, Carol Ann, Irma Mae and Gary Alvin. At the time of her death in 1949, Sophia claimed 19 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. They obviously are not all listed here.
Although the offspring have "flown the coop", from the area, many traces - particularly in the summer on local lakes - can be found.
Frances reflects my understanding that the family was close and remained important to one another throughout the years.
On my long list of to do things, these descendants warrrant further investigation as they are several generations grown. That's the first child Sophia's family. The only one who remained in Canada.

Mott, Stanley Milford (1882 - 1958) - male
b. 27 JUL 1882 in Eel River, NB
d. 1958

mother: Foster, Ruth Lovely (1859 - 1943)
Milford and Agnes (Butler) Mott's household nearly always had children.
Agnes never had children of her own that I am aware of - Milford was carefree, happy, sly and cunning, a tease. Again, when his name is mentioned and the person knew him, a big smile follows as the thought of him comes to their mind. Frequently I think they are selective about the tales they tell about him.The three children I have listed are: John Milford Mott born September 27, 1907 Ressa and Tressa (twins) born April 20, 1914 John was Milford's son. Presently, I am not sharing the rumors regarding his mother's identity as they may be rumors, not fact. John married Gladys ??? who later married a Ewing and that couple ran a local, familiar Ewing's Market - known to open nearly every day of the year long before LL Bean boasted the same. Interestingly, she lived out her life in a home that sits in the middle, two houses from Milford's and three houses from Milford's parents' home. Their daughter Hope married Clovie St. Thomas and had two sons (surprisingly I don't have their names listed.) Hope has died within the last 5 yrs. John went to Milo, Maine and remarried, or vice versa - remarried and went to Milo - where he was a jeweler. (again, more research needed) Twins Ressa and Tressa were biological daughters of Milford's cousin Amber Foster McAlpine, a daughter to Ruth Foster Mott's brother Charles Foster and his wife Ida Smith. Amber died in 1918, leaving 5 girls and a boy. The twins would have been 4 yrs old at the time. The children were seperated and brought up by different people - the twins by Milford and Agnes. Ressa's obituary said that they were adopted by Milford when they were 16, but family photos include McAlpines much, much earlier than that.Tressa died in 1998, Ressa died in 2002. There are multiple marriages and a few offspring who don't respond to queries.Their youngest sister Velma and her husband Roger Allen are living at the local NH. Velma has severe Alzheimers and Roger's health and memory have also failed. A historical buff, he openly would talk about the McAlpine family and their upbringing. The twins were always considered part of the family. In any photo I have seen of them, they were dressed up fancy with bows in their hair. Their father stayed in the area and had potential contact with them. (He may have kept his son with him - but, not the girls.) His obituary is open about his children - and list his daughters as Motts, not by their biological name of McAlpine. There was also a "Rip" Savage who was raised in part by them. One of Agnes' sisters married a Savage so he might have been Agnes' nephew. Interestingly, one of Agnes' sisters married a Millett (and in some long, contorted system beyond me this morning, she is in a 5 generation picture than ties into the Whalens, that go back to Sturgeon family which Milford's brother Gene and sister Floss married into.... ain't small towns grand?) Ken Scott lived there as a teenager. A Ken Scott was married briefly to one of the twins and they had a son Ken that still lives in town, but is not responsive to queries. One of Milford's brother Carl's boys (I think Jerome) lived with them at one time too.I know Agnes' father was a Penobscot Indian and the first dead person I had ever seen. Aunt Lue would walk me from my grandmother's home and visit them when "Gramp Butler", as he was known to the town, lived with them. He had pure white hair. Again, somewhere among my boxes is a huge article printed in the local papers on his 90+ birthday. I know he had just independently paddled across Mattanawcook Lake which is in Lincoln's downtown when the article was printed... and I believe he had his first airplane ride too. (Obviously, this job goes on and on and on and on...)

Dot Harding notes, Jan 2004 Walter and Josephine (White) Mott raised two daughters - Margaret Kathryn Mott, b. October 17, 1911 and Elizabeth M. Mott, b. November 11, 1913 Margaret married Earle Dykeman Taylor and still lives in Millinocket. She openly bragged about her grandchildren when I visited her once.
I recall that there was a duplication of names when the second girl joined the family so I think Elizabeth is Elizabeth Margaret.
Another necessary F/U before long: I believe the two were relatives to the couple and "adopted".I believe the couple were drawn to the mill. The town is relatively new, was settled in the early 1900s.
Do not quote this as I confuse Walter and Hazen at times. They both died unexpectedly - one from a horsekick, the other from pneumonia (he jumped into the cold lake after a hot day's work). More unfinished business for me to F/U.

b. 30 JUN 1940 in Fredericton, NB
d. 1 JUN 2018 in Fredericton, NB
The passing of Arnold Robert Murray of Oromocto, NB, husband of Marlene (Boone), occurred on Friday, June 1, 2018 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Born on June 3, 1940, in Fredericton, NB, he was a son of the late Murdock and Daisy (Shafe) Murray. Arnold was employed as Assistant Manager at K-Mart then accepted the position of Senior Purchaser with Department of Supply and Services. Arnold had a dry sense of humour and loved to entertain us all with his many jokes and storytelling.
